Building Market-Driven Software

Recently we wrote about the functionality wants and needs we heard from database administrators, and how we incorporated that feedback into the new Double-Take Share 5.2. Double-Take Share 5.2 is market-driven, which is not always the case with software design. Sometimes software functionality gets built in just because an engineer figured out how to program something interesting or cool. We don't design software that way; instead we poll the market first to find out what users need, then we start programming.

The Birth of a Technology

One of the interesting facets of being in the technology industry is watching business trends drive technical development. The cycle is always the same: Someone develops a technology for a certain purpose or to meet a specific need, people use it for what it was developed to do, then they start to think up new ways they can use it to meet other unfulfilled needs. The developer takes note of how people are actually using their product or technology and what the “new” need is, and then they make another iteration of the product that is purpose-built to meet the new need.
